John McElvana's parents are immigrants of Ireland but he was born in South Carolina in 1810. We have not located the exact county but we hope that soon with the help of one of our distant cousins Ed McNally we will. Ed has hired a genealogist to trace down the McElvana's exact origin and when we have it, I will enter the info here. John married Elizabeth Sparks from South Carolina and 2 of his 6 children, Elizabeth (1841) and William (1845) were born here in S.C.Scott Reynolds,(another cousin) has been researching the McElvana's for a few years and states that John left SC for Georgia about 1845-1846 for 3 of his children wer born there, Nancy Jane (1846),George W. (1848) and Francis Marion who is our gr-grandfather was born there in 1852. | |
Our best estimate of when John and his family moved from Georgia to Alabama would be somewhere between 1852-1856 because John's last son, Roswell Burch was born in Cleburne (Calhoun) county in 1856. I have a few records on the children as follows; Nancy Jane married W.F. Wilder in Blount County on 7-18-1886 George married Nancy S. Wilson on 11-8-1877 Roswell married J.A. LaRue on 5-3-1877 Francis McElvana married Mary Martha Dalton Blalock (1878)
