The Smith's Road of Life!

Gr-gr-gr Grandpapa ELLIOTT S. SMITH and Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandma Margaret J.have been like small road signs leading to dead-ends. I have searched every census and cemetery record I can find but I just keep going around in circles. Elliott was born in South Carolina in 1808. He married Margaret before 1834 in South Carolina. She was born 1811 in South Carolina.Their children were Mary born 1834, Elliott A. born 1840, ( according to this census), Nancy born 1843, Jehu born 1847 and George born 1850. They are listed in the Blount County 1860 census so I do not know if all of their children were born in South Carolina or not. One census has the children as being born in South Carolina and another has Alabama so I guess this will always be a mystery because no birth certificates are on file for any of them.
ELLIOTT A. SMITH
Elliott A. was my gr-gr-grandfather, he was born 1842( according to the 1880 census) in SC.He married Margaret Hays on September 16, 1866 in Blount County, Alabama. He is listed in the 1880 Blount County Beat # 13 Alabama census as Elliot A. born SC age 38, Margaret born Alabama age 37, Arena A. born Alabama age 12, Julian A. born Alabama age 10, Nancy born Alabama age 9 ,William D. (my gr-grandfather) born Alabama age 7, Walton born Alabama age 7 ( this means William and Walton may have been twins or the census is wrong)and Joe D. born Alabama age 3.
WILLIAM D. SMITH
William D. Smith was born 1871 in Blount County, Alabama. He married Mary Etta Alverson on May 4th, 1892 in St. Clair County, Alabama. Their children were Herman Dewey (my grandfather born July 19th, 1897 in Coal City and died September 8th, 1957 in Jefferson County, Alabama,Lufkin Vincent, Finis born October 26, 1901 and died September 23,1988, Audrey Smith Funk born January 11, 1912 and died February 1970 in Indiana and Mertis Smith Eady ( dates unknown)
HERMAN DEWEY SMITH

His discharge was not issued until March 2nd,1950 and I am not sure why but I am trying to find out.
